چکیده

Abstract. The spectral fine structures of Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR) are best investigated with the wideband receiver (WBR) Cassini's Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument, which measured radio fluxes can be displayed in time–frequency spectra resolutions 125 ms ∼0.1 kHz. We introduce seven different classes SKR ranging from dots (one class for 0-dimensional objects) over lines (four 1-dimensional objects being horizontal, vertical, or negative positive slope) to areal features 2-dimensional objects). Additionally, we define a seventh containing special named according their appearance spectra. These rain, striations, worms, caterpillar latter two have never been described literature so far. Using this newly defined classification scheme, classify at low frequencies baseband 80 kHz WBR medium around 325 A statistic occurrence various sub-classes shows some notable characteristics: slope much more common than vertical almost absent frequencies. particular structure striations (group narrowbanded predominantly slopes) is quite below but less near At these frequencies, rather look like interrupted term name “rain”. also find rare instances absorption signatures within features. introduced worms (lines oscillating frequency) caterpillars occur exclusively Caterpillars typical bandwidth ∼10 kHz, constant frequency ∼40 several hours they mostly observed beyond distances 10 radii. discuss implications our findings view many theories about auroral emissions.

A possible influence of the Great White Spot on Saturn kilometric radiation periodicity

The periodicity of Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR) varies with time, and its two periods during the first 5 years of the Cassini mission have been attributed to SKR from the northern and southern hemisphere. After Saturn equinox in August 2009, there were long intervals of time (March 2010 to February 2011 and September 2011 to June 2012) with similar northern and southern SKR periods and loc...

CMI growth rates for Saturnian kilometric radiation

[1] We calculate growth rates for extraordinary mode Saturnian kilometric radiation generated by the electron cyclotron maser instability using a ring‐type (DGH) electron phase distribution model fitted to measured electron energy dist r ibut ions in Saturn’s auroral acceleration region. The observed distributions are unstable in spatially isolated regions of transverse linear size of order 10 ...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

3D PiC code investigations of Auroral Kilometric Radiation mechanisms

Efficient (~1%) electron cyclotron radio emissions are known to originate in the X mode from regions of locally depleted plasma in the Earths polar magnetosphere. These emissions are commonly referred to as the Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR). AKR occurs naturally in these polar regions where electrons are accelerated by electric fields into the increasing planetary magnetic dipole. Here con...

The Emission of Narrow-Band Jovian Kilometric Radiation

A model based on the nonlinear coupling of electrostatic plasma waves is proposed to explain the emission of the narrow-band Jovian kilometric radiation (nKOM) observed by the Voyager spacecraft. it is shown that upper-hybrid branch electrostatic waves propagating through the inhomogeneities in the outer periphery of the Io plasma torus can attain the proper geometry for localized upconversion ...
